During this tough time of COVID-19, the Ocean State Makos have fantastic news. We have added another great coach to an already reputable staff. Bob Downey has been recently named as Head Coach of the Makos 14u White team for this summer. As a long time baseball coach, Downey brings an incredible knowledge of the game to the table, as the long time  High School  Coach as well as numerous years at multiple levels as a player.

As a player Bob captained the North Kingstown High School Varsity team in 1989 and then went on to Rhode Island College and played four years, also captaining the squad in 1993.  He then went on to a successful 14 year stint in the George Donnelly Sunset League until 2004, where his Mariners team won SEVEN League Championships.

Bob has had a long stellar career as a High School Coach, beginning at NK in 1994 through 1999 in multiple sports... Baseball, Football and Basketball.  He then took on the Head Coach role at East Greenwich High School in 2000 and has been there ever since, for 21 years.  During that span he has had significant success, with 4 Final Four appearances (1 Championship appearance) in Division 2 from 2000-2006 and then moved to Division 1 and has had 2 Final Four appearances there.

Bob has coached 9 All State Players (including 1 Gatorade Player of the Year), has had 17 straight RIIL playoff appearances, has sent 30 players to collegiate level baseball and has mounted an incredible 200+ wins in his career.  He has run the EGHS Baseball Camp for 11 straight years and has assisted the Riverdogs AAU program from 2015-2018.

When “East Greenwich HS Baseball" is said, many Rhode Islanders automatically think of Coach Downey because of his leadership, development of his players, and his general love for baseball and his role in his players’ lives. We are so fortunate to be able to have Coach Downey on the staff… Just another reason that our Makos coaching staff is unmatched. Welcome to the Makos, Coach!
